The Catalan farmhouse is a type of rural construction that abounds in the Old Catalunya but which is also located in Valencia, Mallorca, Menorca and Aragon.
La Masia is the central building of a Mas. The difference is that the farmhouse is only the home and the Mas is the whole house, the farmland and the forests. In short, the Mas is the farming exploitation outside the town center. 
The Catalan farmhouse is related to the daily life of the farmers or shepherds, so that is also called "Casa de pagés". The Masia is a construction that is usually very large. In the past the owner, the heir, the other brothers, the family, the servants and the shepherds were living all together. 
Formerly in the Catalan Masias wine and oil were produced and flour was ground. Cold meat and cheeses were also made.
